I don’t want to leave out the gents here. I know the title of this post refers to the ladies. But this is a lifestyle & awareness piece for the lady and gentleman.

Bonjour, Hearts♥️

Let’s talk a little French.

Mademoiselle is a French word that sounds like \mad-mwa-zel\, it literally means – my young lady.

Mademoiselle is defined as a title for an unmarried French woman or girl. For us English speakers, it translates to mean – Miss.

When I’m in my French mode (and I love this mode because it makes me feel chicly creative and adventurous) I call myself and some of my girlfriends Mademoiselle/s.

Well of course, I’ve come across some new information. It’s really not new news, it’s new to me.

I found out that the use of the word Mademoiselle is no longer acceptable in France. The title is not even allowed anymore in official and business documents.

Real quick, here’s why-

Turns out that it is an unfairly used title. Oh how I wish things could just be simple.

In France, men are called Monsieur, English translation is – Mr.

A man or boy is called Monsieur, period. There is no difference in his title if he is married or single. He is always addressed monsieur.

The problem was that the girl/lady/woman was treated differently with her title.

She was called Mademoiselle if she is single-unmarried;

If she was married she would be called –Madame.

Why would the ladies have to carry a title that singled out if they were married or not, yet the gents wouldn’t?

Picture this… A lady & gent meet for the first time right, and before the gent would address the lady and ask her name, he would ask are you married or not… and THEN he would say either [Hi] mademoiselle or madame (uh, what?)

That’s too much and it wouldn’t work or be fair both ways. Because the gentleman is always his one title, with no need to get all in his business, huh.

I wouldn’t want to make this out to be a big deal. I’m glad this has been addressed.

Now, all of the French girls and women are simply called madame.

Well, I started out fondly as Mademoiselle, but now,

I Am Madame.

(Ooolala I like that for a t-shirt.) (Y’all know I love my T’s.)

If you know more about this topic, feel free to be sofly and share.

Much Love
